Thursday afternoon

Here's what we know-
Last night, we were jubilant, and I reported that Lolly had woken up for about 15 minutes.  She was crying out and upset, and it was good to see.  We really thought that she was FINALLY coming out of her cloud of sleepiness.  We were thrilled.  When she was awake, she was not all the way there- she did open her eyes a little, but they still looked "drugged" (from her morning sedation to place the catheter in her neck).  Soon after the short period she was awake, she slept and slept and slept.

Today, she has had little moments of crying out and making sounds, but true to the patten over the past 4 days, she has been asleep 99% of the time.

We were concerned about it yesterday, but the docs thought she was just slow to come out of the anesthesia.  Today, though, she was no better than yesterday (still completely out of it), so the docs decided it was time to call in neurology.

The neurologist came in and evaluated her, and was concerned with a few things.  A few of her reflexes are different from what they would expect, and the fact that she has not been fully awake for FOUR days is very concerning.

I was able to go in with Lolly for a CT scan, and we got the great news that there is no bleeding on her brain (perhaps the first bit of good news in several days).  At the moment, they are doing an EEG, to measure her brain waves.  Threy are trying to determine if she is having seizures (a brain storm- we do not notice any convulsive bahavior, but there could be problems going on in her brain).

I should mention that she is NOT brain dead.  Her brain IS fully functioning.  What we are hoping for is that Lolly has "encephalopathy."  The docs are hoping that her brain is just functioning slowly due to all the other problems she is having.  If it is encephalopathy, she could make a full recovery.  This complication is one that we had not planned for or prepared for in any way.  Everything today has not been easy to hear, and we are extremely concerned.

I'll try to report back after we get news from the EEG.
