I'm finally at Primary Children's with Ben and Lolly. When I walked in, Lolly was so lethargic and tired that she didn't really care that I was here. :( But she did get sad when I left the room. She has woken briefly a few times since I've been here, but has mostly just slept, which is a good thing.
The doctors are quite certain that Lolly has "Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome" caused by e-coli. They are convinced that Tyler and Trey also had e-coli (Tyler was sick with the same symptoms at the end of August and Trey was sick a few days later- and went to the ER twice in one day). HUS (Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome) usually occurs in kids 5 and under- Lolly was not able to cope with the e-coli like the boys did.
They don't really have a treatment for HUS- they just treat the symptoms. The handout they gave us in the hospital says "HUS is a rare disorder that affects children, most often under the age of five. HUS outbreaks usually happen during the summer months, in clusters. Infected children have stomach pain, vomiting, and severe, bloody diarrhea. Even after the vomiting and diarrhea stop, they may still be pale, tired and irritable. Your child will be hospitalized until her kidneys work well and her nutrition is good. The average hospital stay is 10 to 14 days, depending on the seriousness of the disease (YIKES!!!)" There is the possibility that Lolly will need a transfusion or dialysis...but only time will tell. It sounds like the healing process is very slow and gradual, so we'll take it one day at a time.
Thanks to everyone for all the phone calls, texts and emails. We appreciate all the support so much. It really has given us a big lift today with all the craziness around us.
I'll update tomorrow.
Robbie
